The Hour of My Death

A Journal of the Year After I Died by Marge Piercy

After revered poet, novelist, and feminist icon Marge Piercy dies during a medical emergency in October 2022 and is resuscitated, she awakens to an unexpected gift: more life.

The Hour of My Death: A Journal of the Year After I Died is Piercy’s final memoir, an intimate, witty, and deeply alive account of the remarkable year that followed. Written in the Japanese zuihitsu tradition—a fluid literary form that moves between observation, memory, poetry, and reflection—the book gathers diary-like entries, recipes, gardening wisdom, encounters with beloved animals, and Piercy’s luminous poems into a portrait of life after confronting death.

For more than five decades, Piercy has written fearlessly about women’s lives, politics, power, love, work, and the possibilities of a more just world. Now, at 90, she turns that clear-eyed intelligence toward aging, mortality, and the everyday pleasures that make a life worth living.

Joyful, candid, funny, and wise, The Hour of My Death is both a testament to Marge Piercy’s extraordinary literary legacy and a moving celebration of the year she was given back.
