1880. As immigrants flee the violence and upheaval of the post-Reconstruction South, whispers spread of a distant refuge—a place where reinvention is possible, and the past can be left behind.
For New Orleans chef Amadeo Roselyn, Touperdu promises freedom: a chance to build a restaurant of his own and secure a safer future for his daughters. For Gwennoelle Duday, formidable matriarch of a disorderly lineage of witches, it offers something even rarer—a place beyond scrutiny, where power need not be hidden or restrained.
But on the eve of their arrival—one in first class, the other in steerage—both are seized by the same unsettling thought: What if Touperdu is not what it claims to be?
On this isolated island, where superstition and magic intertwine, every promise carries a shadow—and every arrival comes at a cost.
The Newcomers is the first novel in The Chronicles of Touperdu, a sweeping saga of ambition, inheritance, and the perilous lure of starting over.
"Pam Troy has created a breathtaking 19th-century world, populated by unforgettable characters and infused with magic, history, and urgent questions of belonging."
— Pamela Reitman, author of Charlotte Salomon Paints Her Life: A Novel

About the Author
Pam Troy worked for twenty years in the Events Department at San Francisco’s Mechanics’ Institute, one of the oldest libraries on the West Coast. Though she has resided in San Francisco for most of her adult life, she was born and raised in Louisiana, and her fascination with that state’s history, culture and folklore went into creating the world of Touperdu. Her short stories have appeared in magazines and anthologies like Space and Time, Crimson Fog, State of Horror: Louisiana, and Another Dimension. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, a cat, and far too many books.
